Understanding Leaky Gut and Reclaiming Wellness

Growing up eating Fruity Pebbles and Captain Crunch, and all the Little Debby snack bars, being on a long course of antibiotics, living in and working in water-damaged buildings, over-exercising and undereating, not prioritizing sleep or stress management are some of the reasons I found myself struggling with digestive issues later in life.  The term “leaky gut” gets tossed around a lot in the gut health world, but did you ever wonder exactly what it means?

The term “leaky gut,” also known as intestinal permeability, occurs when the tight junctions between the cells of the intestinal lining open up, allowing the passage of undigested food particles, bacteria, and other foreign invaders into the bloodstream.  Let’s explore the symptoms, consequences, and what you can do to help heal your gut.

Unmasking Leaky Gut: Recognizing the Symptoms

Leaky gut doesn’t come with a neon sign announcing its arrival. Symptoms aren’t always clear-cut, but dysfunction in the stomach, gallbladder, or pancreatic enzyme output may point to its probability. Digestion, a north-to-south process, depends on setting up good digestion in the northern part first. Dysfunction in the upper digestive system can cascade into issues further down, impacting the entire digestive process. Read this article to learn more about where digestion starts.

Understanding the Fallout: Results of a Leaky Gut

The gut lining’s cells are normally bound by tight junctions, a key defense for the gut. When inflammation causes these junctions to loosen, undigested particles and toxins slip through, triggering an immune response. This systemic inflammation can lead to uncomfortable symptoms and, in severe cases, disease.1 Important to note: a significant portion of our immune system—70 to 80 percent—is located in the gut. Protecting and nurturing a healthy microbiome is crucial for a resilient immune system.

Identifying Culprits: What Causes Leaky Gut?

Understanding the factors that contribute to leaky gut is key in its support:

  • Chronic Stress: Stress downregulates digestion and reduces bacterial diversity in the gut.2
  • Medications: Birth control pills, overused antibiotics, PPIs, and NSAIDs can disrupt microbiota balance.
  • Standard American Diet (SAD): High in processed foods, sugar, and inflammatory oils, promoting intestinal damage.
  • Overconsumption of Alcohol: Encourages dysbiosis and opens tight junctions in the gut.
  • Dysbiosis: The imbalance between beneficial and harmful bacteria can lead to a leaky gut.
  • Lack of Variety in Diet: Low nutrient variety and fiber affect beneficial gut bacteria and may encourage constipation.
  • High Endurance Exercise: Intense training may increase intestinal permeability.3
  • Gut Infections: Bacterial pathogens, parasites, and yeast overgrowth cause inflammation and disrupt gut function.
  • Dysfunctional Digestion: Improper breakdown of food leads to inflammation and gut lining damage.
  • Low Protein Intake: Essential for stomach acid production and overall digestive health.

Crafting Your Gut Healing Game Plan

Even though everyone’s situation may look different, there are some universal supports for gut health that almost everyone can benefit from.  To get started on healing your gut, consider applying these powerful strategies:

  • Stress Management: Utilize deep breathing, community engagement, journaling, praying, outdoor activities, and gentle exercise to activate the parasympathetic nervous system.
  • Chew Thoroughly: Ensure thorough chewing to support proper digestion and minimize downstream digestive issues.
  • Diversify Your Diet: Embrace a variety of nutrient-rich foods to support a flourishing microbiome.
  • Include Probiotic Foods: Incorporate fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, and yogurt to promote beneficial bacteria.
  • Limit Snacking: Allow your gut time to rest between meals for optimal healing.
  • Prioritize Sleep: Quality sleep fosters a balanced gut microbiome.
  • Liver Support: Enhance liver health through bitter foods, reduced alcohol intake, a nutrient-dense diet, and toxin reduction.
  • Identify Trigger Foods: Pinpoint and eliminate inflammatory foods to facilitate gut healing.
  • Consider Specialized Tests: MRT Food Sensitivity Test and GI MAP can provide valuable insights into food sensitivities and overall gut health.  Functional testing can help you save time, money, and frustration in the long run.

Closing Thoughts

A leaky gut can create major challenges and be very frustrating at times. I know because I’ve been there, too. I also know how great it feels to heal from chronic fatigue, severe constipation, chronic joint pain and inflammation, many food sensitivities, and insomnia. Identifying the root causes of dysfunction is key to making lasting change and healing.
