Let’s get real for a sec – constipation is common, but that doesn’t mean it’s normal.
If you’re not having at least one full, satisfying bowel movement every day, your body could be reabsorbing toxins and excess hormones. This disrupts your gut balance, fuels inflammation, and can leave you feeling bloated, sluggish, and just not yourself.
While long-term relief comes from getting to the root cause, it’s okay to need a little support along the way. In fact, it’s smart. Because when your digestion is moving well, everything else starts to come together-your energy, your mood, your skin, even your sleep.
So, whether you’re traveling, off your routine, or simply need help while your body is healing, here are some of my favorite natural remedies to add to your constipation toolkit:
- Ground flax and chia seeds: These little seeds are packed with soluble fiber that helps bulk and soften stool. Add some of each to your smoothies, yogurt, or make a simple chia pudding. Bonus: they also help balance blood sugar and support estrogen detox- so good for midlife women.
- Aloe vera juice: A gentle natural laxative that draws water into the intestines for easier elimination. I recommend inner fillet aloe vera juice in clean brands like Lily of the Desert or Lakewood Organic. Start with a small amount and see how your body responds.
- Grated beets: Raw beets support liver and gallbladder function-two key players in healthy digestion. I love mine grated and topped with a fresh lemon juice or apple cider vinegar and olive oil dressing, plus a little sea salt.
- MCT oil: Medium-chain triglycerides are easily absorbed fats that can help lubricate the gut and support microbiome balance. I like Perfect Supplements brand. You can use the code JENNIFER10 to save 10%.
- Magnesium citrate or glycinate: Magnesium citrate helps move the bowels by drawing in water, while glycinate is gentler and helps with relaxation. Both can be a helper-choose what your body needs.
- Castor oil packs: A great way to support the liver, lymphatic flow, and digestion. You can make your own at home or try a kit like Queen of the Thrones.
- Oxy-Powder: An oxygen-based supplement that works overnight to soften stool. It’s great to take along for travel!
- Morning lemon water: Warm lemon water on an empty stomach gently stimulates digestion and bile flow. It’s a morning habit non-negotiable for me!
- Eat more foods that keep things moving: Kiwi, sauerkraut, leafy greens, beets, chia pudding, berries, cooked apples (skin on). These nourish your gut and are supportive of elimination.
- Move your body: Walking and stretching can help stimulate digestion. Even a 10-minute walk after meals can make a huge difference.

But What If Nothing Seems to Work?
That’s your cue to dig deeper. Constipation is often a symptom, not the root issue. You could be dealing with:
- Low stomach acid
- Poor bile flow
- Sluggish thyroid
- Dysbiosis (imbalanced gut bacteria)
- Mineral imbalances
This is where functional testing can be helpful. I use tools like the GI-MAP stool test, HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis), and the MRT Food Sensitivity Test when needed, to help uncover the “why” behind your symptoms-and create a personalized plan to support true healing.
